Stronger for the Planet 2025

Sustainability isn’t an add-on. It’s a core part of our business. At Tornado Wire, we see it as a strategic priority. It shapes how we work, how we grow, and how we look after people and the planet. We’re here to build fencing that stands the test of time. We’re also here to build a future that’s better than today.

Built to Last, Designed to Recycle

Our fences are strong. They need to be. We make high-tensile wire fencing for tough jobs in tough environments. But we also make it to last. A typical Tornado fence will be in service for 25 years or more. When it’s finished its job, it can be recycled. Steel is endlessly recyclable. That matters. Less waste. Less impact. More responsibility.

Our latest product innovation is the Pro-Strain® i-Post®. It replaces timber with steel and recycled plastic. No toxic treatments. No creosote. Just a cleaner, stronger solution. The plastic insert is made from recycled agricultural plastic. It’s processed in the neighbouring county to our factory. That’s local, and that matters too.

Clean Power, Real Change

In 2024, we began the switch to 100% green electricity. We completed it in early 2025. That means our factories now run on renewable energy. Carbon emissions dropped slightly in 2024. This year, the impact will be bigger. It’s a serious shift, and just the start.

We’ve also replaced our forklifts with electric models. Company cars too. We’re investing in energy monitoring, training, and better systems to cut down further. And we’re exploring on-site power generation. These aren’t gestures. They’re steps. Each one helps us move in the right direction.

Goals, Not Guesses

We don’t do vague promises. We’ve committed to halving our Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity by 2030. That’s our goal. And we’re backing it up with real change.

We’re working towards ISO 14001 certification. Our Stage 1 audit is booked for August. Full certification is expected by the end of the year. That will give our customers and partners extra confidence that we mean business.

Materials That Make Sense

We’re honest about our supply chain. Our main input is drawn steel wire. It has a footprint. It also doesn’t come from the UK. But it is 100% recyclable. And by making long-lasting products, we reduce the need for constant replacements. Our approach is to do what we can, where we can. The recycled plastic insert is a great example. We took a waste problem from the farming world and turned it into something useful. That’s progress.

People First

Sustainability is about people too. Our values include a clear message: safer for people and the planet. That starts with our team. Nothing we do is so important that it’s worth risking someone’s safety. We work hard to keep our team safe, supported, and proud of what we build.

We take the same approach in our community. We donate materials to schools. We get involved in local projects. We host events like National Manufacturing Day, where we open our factory to schools and families. It’s about showing what we do, sharing our pride in it, and helping others see what’s possible.

Each year, we support Millom School with mock interviews. We help students build confidence. Ask better questions. Understand how the world of work feels. These are small acts with big impact.

Guided by Experience

Sustainability at Tornado is led by the CEO and HSQE Manager. We don’t have a big corporate team. We don’t need one. We know what matters, and we take it seriously. Our shareholder group has a dedicated sustainability expert who supports us with advice and reporting. We measure our progress, review it with third parties, and report annually to our board and shareholders. It’s part of how we run the business.

Smarter Products, Smarter Choices

Customers want strong, reliable fencing. They also want better environmental outcomes. We help them get both. Our fencing systems last longer, perform better, and avoid the chemicals used in many timber options. Creosote is toxic. Other treatments often don’t last. Our solution does.

With Pro-Strain® and i-Post®, we’ve created a system that combines high-tensile wire with steel and recycled plastic. It’s durable, low maintenance, and fit for the future. For farmers, contractors and landowners who care about cost, safety and sustainability, it’s a better choice. It’s a Tornado product.

The Work Ahead

We know we’re not perfect. We still rely on carbon-heavy materials and third-party logistics. But we’re moving in the right direction. Every change we make is practical, tested, and grounded in the real world. That’s how progress happens. Not in theory. In practice.

We don’t greenwash. We don’t overclaim. We focus on doing things that matter, then doing them better next time. Sustainability isn’t just a target. It’s a mindset. One we bring to everything we do.
