Millom students get hands-on with manufacturing at Tornado Wire 2025

Tornado Wire opened its factory doors in Millom, Cumbria, on 25 September to mark Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day, welcoming more than 100 visitors from local schools and the wider community.

Pupils from Black Combe Junior School, St James’s Catholic Primary School, and Millom School explored Tornado’s manufacturing site, met the team behind the scenes, and discovered the real-world impact of careers in engineering and manufacturing.

Several of the young visitors were children, grandchildren, or relatives of Tornado employees, adding an extra sense of pride and connection across the day.

It was a full team effort. Tornado staff led guided tours, demonstrated machinery in action, and shared their experiences of working in British manufacturing. Students also learned about Millom’s proud industrial heritage, including the town’s iron mining roots.

One manager commented: “National Manufacturing Day went really well and was a credit to all.”

Rebecca Galley, CEO of Tornado Wire, added: “It was brilliant to see the students interested in what we do, and to see the team proudly showing off our business. The day was fantastic for manufacturing, for Tornado, and for the community.”

Tornado Wire looks forward to continuing to support local schools and inspire the next generation of engineers and makers.
