Tackling Tough Terrain in Dumfries with Rory Samson of Samson Fencing
R8/80/22 Lamb friendly Torus netting
Project Overview
Grazing Fence Installation in Ae Village, Dumfries
The challenge
The project involved fencing off a new grazing area for sheep and horses in Ae Village, Dumfries. The primary challenge was the rocky terrain, which made post installation difficult. Additionally, the property borders an expansive forest with extensive forest roads, raising concerns about securely containing the livestock.
Approach
To address these challenges, Clipex posts and Pro-Strain strainers were selected for their durability and strength. The Pro-Strain strainers offer a compact, robust design that blends well with the landscape—an important consideration for this location.
Installation was carried out using the Bryce Suma for the Pro-Strain strainers and the Christie Easy Petrol Post Driver for the Clipex posts—both ideal tools for efficient and effective deployment in tough ground conditions.
An electric wire was added along the top of the fence to deter horses from leaning over, which also contributes to the longevity of the fence. We used R8/80/22 lamb-friendly Torus netting, our preferred choice for all fencing projects. This netting minimizes ear tag loss and helps prevent sheep from getting their heads stuck.
A key advantage of the Clipex system is that each line of netting is clipped securely into place, providing excellent resistance to pressure from livestock, such as sheep rubbing against the fence.
The Result
The Pro-Strain strut system significantly improved installation speed and efficiency. The integrated turnbuckle allows for quick adjustments, enhancing productivity along the fence line. The result is a strong, long-lasting fence that meets the needs of both the terrain and the livestock.
