Lynx Enclosures at Wildwood Trust

Overview

Wildwood Trust, a native species conservation charity based in Herne Bay, Kent, undertook the construction of two new Lynx enclosures as part of The Missing Lynx Project. This initiative supports the captive breeding and potential reintroduction of Lynx into the wild in the UK. Led by Mark Kirkbride and his team, the project required a fencing solution that was secure, durable, and animal-appropriate.

Challenge

The project presented multiple unique challenges:

• Restricted access: Limited space on-site meant heavy machinery could not be used during installation.

• Animal-specific requirements: Lynx are strong and agile, requiring fencing that could withstand their physical capabilities.

• Safety and durability: The fencing needed to be long-lasting, and safe for both animals and keepers.

Approach

Mark consulted with Wayne Beckett from Tornado Wire, and he recommended fencing based on the animal. The zookeepers also provided valuable insights into Lynx behaviour and enclosure requirements.

Products used:

• R19/180/5

• R10/90/5

Result

Despite space limitations, the installation was completed efficiently in just three days.

“The Quality of Tornado Wire is always good and it’s easy to work with.” - Mark Kirkbride, Wildwood Trust

The completion of the enclosures has enabled Wildwood Trust to progress with their conservation goals, providing a secure environment for the Lynx as part of their reintroduction efforts.
